On Tuesday 18th October at 2 pm a group of Midlands’ women gathered in King Street to stage a quiet protest. They were there to raise awareness of the #Challengethe5percent project which highlights the disparity of the depiction of women featured in public statues. Less than 5 per cent of statues in the UK represent women. Artist and sculptor Rachel Carter is gaining support and looking to raise £300,000 to create a piece showing two women intertwined: one representing the women who worked in the Midlands textile mills and the other women who were enslaved and working in the cotton fields of America and the Caribbean. Rachel says: “I enjoy using art to re-examine history from a female perspective, to re-interpret the history and culture that surrounds us, celebrating the extraordinary endeavours of ordinary and unrecognised people, who have shaped the world we inhabit today. By creating work collaboratively, we promote dialogue and conversation to create new works and exhibitions, showcasing the community talent and providing a new way to engage with our history.” If the campaign is successful, the bronze sculpture will be in the Nottingham Broad March area. Please consider a donation to this important work which Speakers’ Corner Trust is happy to endorse. https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/sitp?utm_term=9jJE5MjX9
